(☞ﾟヮﾟ)☞ What is this?
Chochin(提灯) is a paper lantern. A red paper lantern is called akachochin. Aka means red. I mention it because you’ll often see akachochin hanging in the front of an izakaya.
When adventuring in Tokyo you’ll see chochin lanterns accenting many shops — bringing an old Edo Period feel to the modern Japan. It’s one of those Japanese traditions that gives Tokyo character.
And during matsuri season (festivals) you’ll find chochin all over to show the festival grounds and add light when the sun goes down.
“Many Japanese festivals involve decorating shrines, temples and streets with chochin that often number in the thousands.” (japan-talk.com)
