Japanese A5 wagyu beef is super, SUPER expensive. Obviously the price will fluctuate some, but the average price right now is around $250 per pound.
That’s about $15 per ounce!
The average steak is about 225 grams or 7.9 ounces; putting the average A5 wagyu steak price at a whopping $118 unprepared.
Then the restaurant will add their charges on top of that.

The question of A5 wagyu price comes up a lot.
Partly because I often recommend high-grade wagyu beef restaurants in Tokyo. And after completely enjoying your meal, you’ll wonder how you can get your hands on some — to cook at home.
If you want to learn more about Japanese wagyu beef, I have written a massive article that will really teach you everything you’ll need to know — “Japanese Wagyu Beef: The Complete & Definitive Guide.”
But in that guide, I only touch on the price; so let’s dive into why it’s expensive.
Craftsmanship, Pride, and Attention to Detail
It really comes down to these things.
The Japanese rancher/farmer when raising wagyu cattle that will become the legendary A5 rank wagyu beef — take exceptional care, pride, and attention to detail to achieve this goal.
And that costs a lot of money and time.
A5 wagyu is literally a luxury item — and the price reflects it.
Imagine it this way.
If you spent 300-900 days pampering cattle with nothing but the absolute best possible feed, living quarters, and range to roam.
Also going far above and beyond to ensure nothing but the highest quality facilities, cleanliness, and vet care.
And then even after all of that exceptional care, only a tiny percentage of the cattle will truly reach the coveted A5 grade.
So it’s easy to imagine why it is expensive. But at least the price is understandable.
I Recommend A4 Wagyu
I know A5 is the tippy-top, best-of-the-best… but guess what.
There’s a darn good chance you won’t notice the difference between A4 and A5 wagyu.
And you can find A4 wagyu for more like $110 per pound. Less than half the price of A5!
